My Subjects

Personal Reflection
Two things I am good at are talking in front of the class and listening to other's when they talk.
Two things I need to improve on are doing my homework and following instructions.
My goals for the next 6 weeks of school are paying attention in class, studying when theres tests/quizzes, and try on getting all my grades in high 80's.

Math

Term 1 Reflection

This first term was really easy. We learned many things. Like Ratios, Proportions, and Rates. There were different kinds of ratios. My favorite one was Two Term Ratio. Two term Ratio compares two quantities measured in the same units. Three Term Ratio compares three different quantities measured in the same units. A rate compares two quantities measured in different units. A unit price is used when you go shopping Proportion is a relationship that says that two ratios or rate are equal and can be written as a fraction. After we learned ratios, rates, and proportions, Mr. Harbeck made grade eight students make a Sesame Street video that had to include what we have learned about ratio, rate and proportion. The members in my group were Joshua, and Breanna. After all that fun, we moved to more serious stuff. The class learned new formulas for example. a²+b²=c². We learned many new words such as hypotenuse. Which meant opposite of the right angle. Hopefully my year of being in grade eight is going to be successful just like my first term was.

Term 2 Reflection

In term 2 I did well in many things. But my favourite section was finding Volume. I struggled throughout the term, but what made my grade go low was finding the surface area. Also, I struggled in commenting on the Sargent Park Math Zone. I will do better next term by actually paying attention instead of texting in class. I would also comment on the blog and do a very good job when its my turn to debut my work. I learned that percentage was out of 100, and it can be shown in fraction, ratio, and decimals. In surface area I learned to find the area of a square, the area of a cylinder, a rectangular prism, and a triangle prism. When it came for volume, I didn’t understand how to do it, until Colleen taught me how. She taught me how to find the volume with a 3D shape.

GRADE EIGHT STUDENT ASSIGNMENT- PORTFOLIO REFLECTION
TASK/INTENT/CRITERIA
Throughout the year I have completed assignments based on Assessment for Learning practices. The learning process has followed the three key components:
Subject: English Language Arts
Topic: Short Story “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes

TASK: What was I asked to do for this assignment ?
I was required to compose a friendly letter using information from a short story.

INTENT: Why am I completing this assignment?
There are several reasons I am doing this writing assignment. First I learned the elements of a short story and learned to identify them in our story. Next, we learned the components to write in a friendly letter format. Then we applied specific story details and wrote in the first person as if we were a character from the short story.

CRITERIA: How do I know what I needed to do to be successful in completing this assignment?

  • Use proper Friendly letter format referring to the letter frame
  • Compose the rough copy letter using specific details from the short story and write the letter from the perspective of one of the main characters in the story
  • Remember to use appropriate tone and audience for the letter
  • Complete all steps in the writing process as set out in the assignment directions

NEXT STEPS: Upon completion of this assignment I can now
  • I can now identify elements of a short story
